The idea behind the design graduate Eugenie Morpurgo’s
Repair-it-Yourself shoes is to draw attention to the nature of mass-produced
items that cost the earth and aren’t designed to be mended. These days the idea
of darning a hole in your trousers or re-hemming a skirt is unthinkable, you’d
just nip to the high street and buy a replacement!
This wasn’t always the case, back in the day before
mass-marketing people actually took care of their possessions and when they
broke they fixed them rather than forking out cold hard cash for new stuff.
It makes sense that the people at Repair It Yourself have
thought over this issue and decided to take things back to basics when it comes
to shoe design. Rather than creating shoes that are tightly held together
with stitching and glue these shoes are designed with materials that come apart
when you need them to. This means that if you wear a hole into the sole of your
shoes then you can simply remove it and put a new one on rather than having to
chuck away the whole thing.
The project aims to hand the consumer back the feeling of
valuing their belongings as well as the knowledge that is gained when learning
to mend something. The lightweight canvas shoes are completely customisable and
come with a complimentary repair kit, something that everyone should own!
