Last year a study found that 85% of women hold onto clothes
that they never wear. The Guardian put this down to us holding onto clothes for
sentimental value, because we expect our size to change, or for financial
reasons : who wants to throw away something they’ve never worn, and admit that
it was a waste of money?
But if it was easier to sell on our second-hand clothes,
maybe we wouldn’t let them take up valuable space in our wardrobes for so long.
While we’re happy to donate the majority of our old clothes to charity shops,
there is the occasional item that would be worth reselling if eBay wasn’t such
a hassle – and that’s where Depop comes in.
Cutting out the whole auction process, depop lets you sell
straight from your social media accounts. All you do is snap a photo on your
phone and share it across facebook, Twitter and Instagram instantly. And that
means you can style up your clothes and get a really cool, fashion-forward shot
that shows them off to their best advantage.
You can follow other sellers, privately message users that
you want to negotiate with or ask questions, and use PayPal to manage all
sales. Compared to eBay it’s a completely streamlined process, and way more
enjoyable to browse as a potential buyer. You can even follow people who have
similar taste to you, and see which items they’re checking out. We’re hoping it’s
the start of being able to directly shop social networks like facebook,
Instagram and Pinterest, since what other people are sharing and talking about
plays such a huge role in what we want.
And if you’re still undecided about whether to sell that
dress which you never wear, but might find an occasion for someday, we
recommend checking out Into Mind. It’s an amazing website all about adopting a
minimalist, streamlined approach to personal style that can help de-clutter
your life (and wardrobe).
Take their Wardrobe Diagnostics quiz to figure out why you
have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear, and then keep their advice
in mind when you’re deciding which pieces don’t deserve a place there anymore.
We’re currently working our way through their ‘Six Pillars of Wardrobe Building’ to make sure that we never end up with piles of unloved and unworn
clothing again.
