Something happened to me a while ago and I can’t really put
my finger on what bought about this sudden and unexpected change… I joined a
gym. I mean there’s nothing too crazy about that, I’ve joined gyms a dozen
times but the difference is this time I haven’t cancelled my membership after a
couple of months’ worth of nonattendance.
I’ve changed; I actually go to the gym these days, I’m so
familiar with the place that I know all of the instructors names off by heart
(there’s Beatrice, Flavio and a guy appropriately named ‘Slim’ to name a
few). I know which classes I like (box
fit and circuits) and I know what classes I don’t like (Zumba).
To go along side my new love for keeping fit I’ve even gone
as far as to invest in an upgrade to my moth eaten tracksuit bottoms, ten year
old sports bra and ironic Girls Aloud t-shirt that acted as my work out top.
Sports Direct is pretty up there when it comes to affordable
workout clothes if you can be bothered to navigate your way through the
mountains of crap that they have in there. No matter how determined you are to
go in and pick up something specific you’ll be guaranteed to leave with an 8
pack of Puma socks, a brand new pair of running trainers, a four pack of
shuttle cocks and neon yellow wind breaker running jacket – at the very least!
So for those who don’t have the inclination to get there exercise
gear at Sports Direct (other sporting goods emporiums are available) there is
another option. Let’s just say that hitting the gym is about to get 100% more
chic.
Online retail behemoth Net-a-porter is poised to launch a
new sister site, aptly (although rather cheasily) named Net-A-Sporter – see
what they did there? The new platform is set to cater to the modern woman who
wants to dress as stylishly in the gym as she does in all other areas of her
life.
Available across 170 different countries the aim is to
provide specialised attire to eleven sporting disciplines including running,
yoga and even equestrian endeavours for all those avid horse-riders out there.
On top of that the site will be the exclusive stockist for
Ballet Beautiful, Live the Process and Wear Grace as well as carrying exclusive
capsule collections by designers including Zimmerman and Lisa Marie Fernandez.
The most interesting part of all this, in my humble opinion,
is the creation of a new genre of clothes ‘après-workout’ for items that will
take you effortlessly from the gym to cocktails with the gals apparently! I
don’t think it’s the clothes that really stop me from going out straight after 30
minute cross trainer session but rather the impressive sweat patches and
beetroot red face.
The president of Net a Porter, Alison Loehnis told Women’s
Wear Daily a little more about the project; ‘women are looking for product to
take them from a Pilates class to lunch with a friend, adapting their work out
wear into more of a day look. If a woman is paying close attention to her
shoes, bags and make-up then she shouldn’t have to compromise on her style
while she’s exercising. ‘
