Before starting her own label, Tiffany
Phillips spent ten years collaborating on accessories design with Chanel,
Maison Michel, Kenzo, Loewe and Atelier Swarovski. So it’s no surprise that her
line, with design partner Sion Phillips, offers a directional twist on the
whole concept of fine jewellery.
Their offering, URiBE, is a London-based
collection that is all about modernity. For Autumn/Winter 2014 it throws navy
beads and monochrome stripes together against elegant, slender strips of gold:
elements that could be a little too predictable, until they’re arranged like
grinning faces or placed on asymmetric cuffs.
The collection is influenced by travel and heritage
– between them Tiffany and Sion have Chilean-American and Welsh roots – but not
in any traditional or obvious way. It all feels fresh and tongue in cheek,
which makes sense given Sion’s background in branding and design concepts for
groups such as Stella Artois, Nike and BMW.
My favourite pieces are probably the gold
cuffs, studded with a giant blue bead on one side and stripes on the other. It
would add interest to classic black, and is somehow quirky but understated at
the same time. It’s hard to resist those faces on the necklaces, though, and I
wonder if they will become one of URiBE’s signatures – especially the triangle version,
which looks slightly alarmed.
URiBE isn’t available to buy online yet
(although their website promises that a digital boutique is on its way). But you can sign up to receive updates on stockists here in the meantime – we’re hoping
to see it on the streets and stocked by some of London’s coolest stores soon.
It’s a natural fit for Shoreditch hipsters, but we wouldn’t be surprised if
URiBE is adopted around the world, too.
