Not a lot of our time is spent thinking about where our
clothes really come from or how they’re made. Sure, we know more about ethical
clothing than many of the generations before us but apart from thinking about
our next investment piece from COS how much time do we actually think about the
state of the fashion industry.
The clothing industry is a multibillion dollar buisness that
equates for a staggering proportion of the world’s pollution. This information
isn’t a secret but clothes are continuing to be made cheaper and cheaper and on
a mass-produced scale. When did fashion become fast-fashion?
The New Black, a film released on YouTube this month
explores the fashion industry and seeks to engage the viewer in a dialogue
about the future of clothing, where they will come from, what they will look
like and how they will be made.
The documentary focuses on some key industry insiders
including designers, innovators and leaders who are paving the way for the
future of fashion. We are shown inside Studio XO, one of the pioneers of
fashion technology who specialise in engineering dream like creations that have
been seen on everyone from Lady Gaga to the Black Eyed Peas.
We also hear from sportswear giant Adidas who talk through
the developments that they have made in the field of wearable tech specifically
designed for athletes.
At the end of the day, unlike other industries such as film
and music, fashion has yet to undergo a technological revolution. Clothes are
made in much the same way as they were thousands of years ago with the same
materials. But The Next Black highlights some of the interesting and
progressive developments that are being made on the fashion industry.
From what we’ve seen in the short film fashion could
potentially be on the verge of a dramatic shift for the first time in a very
long time.
What do you think of the film?
