• Wearable Art Designer: Una Burke

It gives me great pleasure to introduce a truly amazing wearable art designer Una Burke. The brilliant Irish designer, who studied BA Fashion design at Limerick school of Art and Design, creates fascinating and visually captivating pieces that are some of the most coveted garments around.
Each collection that the talented designer produces is technically challenging and defies all normal practices of garment construction. Her methods of creation are innovative and unique.

Burke describes the process that she takes in creating her fabulous pieces as taking “traditional leatherworking techniques to produce evocative, conceptual creations.” With one quick glance at Burke’s work you will instantly appreciate her skills as a leather craftswoman with a unique artistic concept and functional design.

Burke’s collection entitled RE.TREAT exemplifies her creative talent to the fullest. This collection of clothing looks restricting to say the least but could also be regarded as a luxe take on corsetry meets high fashion. Restriction is very much a notion of inspiration for Burke’s RE.TREAT collection whereby “restriction becomes healing”. Garments from this collection can soon be purchased online from store Not Just a Label, with current pieces retailing on the site ranging from one hundred fifty to a thousand pounds.

What is particularly impressive about the concept of restriction throughout the collection is Burke’s concentration on the healing stages of human trauma, be it physical or psychological which inspires her to produce her dynamic and interesting pieces.

Each design is hand crafted from vegetable tanned leather which indicatively represents human flesh, but these designs can be broken down into sections and worn as fashion accessories such as an arm or leg brace.

These elaborate garments which pertain to nothing less than wearable art should be styled with flowing fabrics to contrast with the structure of the pieces produced by Burke to fully encapsulate a dramatic and stylish look.
