Fashion
Design for the Digital Age
Mary
Huang and Jenna Fizel are no run of the mill fashion designers, they didn’t
study at London College of fashion and they don’t have pre-fall shows this
season at any fashion week near you. These talented ladies take a slightly less
orthodox approach to design that’s less measuring tape and pins and more pixels
and 3D drawings.
With
a background in interaction design and architecture Huang and Fizel are no
novices when it comes to technology but their approach to fashion is certainly
something new. Their project D Dress
allows users to turn their hand at designing their own wardrobe staple; the
little black dress. The website Constrvct enables anyone to upload their own
images onto items including dresses, skirts and tops and see their creations in
3D via the online app and interface. Not only can you upload your own artwork
but you can input your own specific measurements to ensure your garment fits
you perfectly, avoiding any purchases that turn out a little too tight or
loose.
The
artwork is digitally printed onto material and your garment is made in a way
that Huang describes as a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, speaking of
the aim of Constrvct she explained that they wanted to “capture the collaborative
creativity of our generation”. The site aims to make fashion design easily
accessible for anyone just as making music or videos is now possible to do from
the comfort of your own home, so why not fashion?
Constrvct
is truly like grown-ups playing at dress up, you can explore some of the
designs that have been made by other users including stunning geometric prints
and floral numbers to some more unusual pieces such as a dress that features
the head of Ted Dansen emblazoned on it. Constrvct is the perfect platform to
show off creativity and self-expression and you get a stunning dress at the end
of it too, what more could you ask for?!
