• Benjamin John Hall’s Conceptual Shoes

London based footwear designer Benjamin John Hall is the creator of an impressive collection of men’s and women’s shoes that are designed around the concept of the process of human experiences with birth, life, death and resurrection.

(Women’s “Life” Shoes)

The seven piece collection features seven pairs of shoes; two pairs for men and two pairs for women that represent birth, life and death alongside a single pair that represent the idea of resurrection.

The series is a magnificently imaginative and conceptual collection, unlike anything we’ve ever seen; each set of shoes undergo a physical process that relates to its theme.

(Men's “Birth” Shoes)

The men’s “Birth” shoe is wrapped delicately in futuristic looking foil which is slowly filled with a viscose black ink, when it is full the foil is then pierced and cut with a scalpel with a surgical effect so that the black ink bleeds out. After the shoe is bled dry the foil is then carefully removed to reveal with shoe beneath.

Similarly the women’s “Birth” shoe features a huge asymmetric platform with straps made of hospital grade tubes which are again filled with thick black ink, after all of the ink passes through, the tube is then snipped and sealed as if it were an umbilical cord.

The collection is incredibly tactile and visual, they breathe and bleed and flash; they are essentially alive, they die and are then finally resurrected in the fire. According to Hall the work attempts to reflect people’s different attitudes or beliefs surrounding birth, life, death and resurrection. A fantastically experimental and transcendental collection, Hall’s collection was the deserving winner of the international YKK Award at the International Talent Support in Italy in July last year.
